Why This Site Exists

When Muhammad started researching snow day tools in 2022, he found the same problems everywhere: tools with outdated UX that forced users to enter a ZIP code they may not know, prediction models that only looked at snowfall totals and ignored the variables that actually drive closure decisions — ice accumulation, storm timing relative to bus hours, wind chill thresholds, and regional infrastructure differences.

He also noticed something no other tool was saying out loud: freezing rain closes more schools than snow in most of the country, yet every calculator treated snowfall as the only variable. A quarter-inch of ice in Georgia closes schools that 6 inches of snow would not.

SnowDayCalculation.com was built to fix both problems — a tool designed around how families actually use it, backed by a prediction model transparent enough to explain every factor it weighs. The full methodology is public. Nothing is a black box.

Started tracking school closure data

Began systematic review of school closure announcements against NWS forecast records, identifying patterns in how districts respond to different weather conditions across regions.

Built the first prediction model

Developed the multi-factor scoring algorithm using snowfall, temperature, wind chill, precipitation probability, storm timing, and regional latitude weighting — all informed by the documented closure data.

Identified and fixed the UX gap

After reviewing competing tools, identified that requiring a ZIP code was a barrier for most users. Implemented city-name geocoding and "Use My Location" — making the tool accessible without prior knowledge of postal codes.
