Snow Day Calculation is built with privacy in mind. We collect the minimum data needed to provide the service, we do not run a backend user database, and we never sell personal information. This page explains exactly what we collect, what we do with it, and what we do not do.
What We Collect
Snow Day Calculation collects the following minimal data to function:
- Location data — the city name, ZIP code, or geographic coordinates you provide when using the calculator. This is transmitted to a weather API to retrieve a forecast and is not stored on our servers beyond the duration of your session.
- Anonymous usage statistics — aggregated, non-identifiable page view and feature usage data. This does not include personally identifiable information and is used solely to understand how the tool is being used so we can improve it.
What We Do Not Collect
We do not require login or account creation. We do not store your search history. We do not use cross-site tracking cookies. We do not fingerprint your device. We do not sell, rent, or share any data with third-party advertisers.
Location Permissions
When you click "Use My Location," your browser requests GPS coordinates using the standard browser Geolocation API. If you grant permission, the coordinates are used immediately to fetch a weather forecast. We do not log, store, or retain your coordinates on our servers beyond that single request. You can revoke geolocation permission at any time through your browser settings.
Weather API Usage
To generate predictions, we transmit your queried location (city name or coordinates) to a third-party weather API. That data leaves our site and is subject to the API provider's own privacy practices. Please refer to the Weather APIs page and the relevant provider's privacy policy for information on how they handle query data.
Local Storage & Service Worker
This site uses browser local storage to temporarily cache weather API responses. This reduces redundant network requests and improves performance. Cached data consists of weather forecast results only — not personal information — and is stored entirely in your own browser. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data. A service worker is also used to enable offline functionality and faster repeat visits; it caches static assets (HTML, CSS, JS) and weather responses locally on your device.
Cookies
Snow Day Calculation does not set tracking or advertising cookies. The site may use functional browser storage (local storage, session storage) for caching weather data as described above. For a detailed explanation of what is stored and why, see our Cookies Policy.
AI Prediction
Prediction explanations are generated by an AI model using only the weather parameters fetched for your location. No personal identity, account information, or browsing history is used as an input. The weather parameters themselves are not retained after your session ends.
Analytics
We may use a privacy-respecting, cookieless analytics service to collect aggregated, anonymous data such as page views, session counts, and general geographic region. This data contains no personally identifiable information and is used only for product improvement.
Data Security
All connections to this site use HTTPS (TLS encryption). We do not operate a backend user database, meaning no user data is stored server-side. The site is deployed on infrastructure with industry-standard security controls.
Children's Privacy
This site is designed for general audiences, including students and families. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has submitted personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy to reflect changes in how the site works. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised when changes are made. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
